Prof, the news of your refusal to take the ‘National Honour’ that the government of President Goodluck Jonathan had planned to give you, has almost diminished the celebration of today, your 81st birthday in the mainstream media.
You have a right to your decision and you owe nobody any apology for refusing the ‘honour’. The Nigerian state remains in a dire strait. The obvious truth, as you rightly alluded to is – not much has changed.
"The reasons for rejecting the offer when it was first made have not been addressed let alone solved. It is inappropriate to offer it again to me. I must therefore regretfully decline the offer again.” No reasonable Nigerian can fault the truth in this statement of yours.
NEPA, education, road and other infrastructure, and the kill-and-eat politics of the Nigerian ruling class, still remains the same. We have had so many road maps that the maps are becoming very difficult to comprehend.
I hope that your action will serve as a wake-up call to President Jonathan. His is almost becoming like the many before it. Those voted him in, voted for change, but the reality is that nothing seems to be changing. I know some will say it is too early to judge but the sunrise often gives a clue of how the rest of the day will look like.
